We Will Rock You
Q leads Elric up the path to his cottage. He rather self-consciously unlocks the door and throws it open. "Well, here we are!" He goes in and switches on the lights. "Welcome to my humble abode." He bows awkwardly and grins. "That's my piano there under the window," he says, pointing. "Have a look." He heads for the kitchen. "I'm going to make tea," he tells Elric. "Would you like some?" Q fills the kettle and puts it on the stove. "That's John, my turtle in the tank on the piano. I think he likes my playing. It's kind of hard to tell with a turtle though." He comes back to the lounge. "Sit down," he encourages, pulling out the bench. "Give it a try."

Elric enters after Q. and takes a curious look around. The cottage, to him, has an air of quiet solitude. He moves over to the piano, taking a look at both the instrument and the turtle. "Tea would be great, thank you." he replies politely.
When Q. offers him to try the piano he shakes his head, though. "I don't have the slightest idea what to do with it... "

"It's Earl Grey," Q tells him. "The tea I mean. I hope that's all right." Q reaches into the terrarium and gives John a pat. "You just hit a key," he explains. "Not too hard." Q leans over and strikes middle C. "Like that." He plays the scale up and back. "See," he says, grinning. "It's easy. Go ahead," he nods encouragingly. "You try it."

Sorry for the delay. The blueberries are ripe and I had to get them before the mockingbirds. :)

Elric sips the tea with obvious delight. "It's great!" he replies. he watches what Q. does, then tenatively tries one or two keys. He haltingly plays a rather strange little melody with one finger, than shakes his head.
"Easy enough to play a tune like that... but to make real music with this instrument is not so easy, isn't it?"
He gets up and gestures to Q. to sit. "Won't you play something...?

en route to the airport ;-). I'll get back to you as soon as I've returned...

"There's milk and sugar if you'd like some," Q offers. He tilts his head listening to Elric play.

"It takes practice," he admits. "I haven't played for a while so I'm a little rusty, but thankfully it's coming back." Q is more grateful for that than he can possibly say.

"All right." Q takes a seat, thinking about what to play. He grins suddenly. "Let's start at the very beginning," he half-sings. "That's a very good place to start. When you read you begin with A, B, C. When you sing you begin with Doe, Re, Mi. Doe, Re, Mi." He plays the accompanying notes. "Let's see if I can make it easy.

Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run
Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow Sew
Tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do (oh-oh-oh)

Q is grinning hugely as he sings and plays. He ends with a triumphant chord and turns to face Elric, beaming.

Elric adds milk and atrocious amounts of sugar. He quickly drains his cups and refills it, taking it over to the piano.

"It has a pleasant sound..." Elric smiles encouragingly.

Elric listens closely, not entirely certain what Q. expects of him. The song itself is very simple, yet merry - something human children might sing? But Q.'s play is skillful and lend it some artistic value; Q.'s voice is pleasant enough, and his boyish enthusiasm quite infective.

He bows slightly and smiles: "Well done, Q." He hesitates, uncertain whether Q. expects him to sing or play this song.

Q tries not to stare as Elric practically empties the sugar bowl into his cup. "Got a sweet tooth have you?" He smiles. "My Dad is like that."

"Thanks!" He turns to Elric, still grinning. "That's really all there is to music. Those eight notes. Thirteen if you count the black keys." He waves a hand at the piano in explanation. "Would you sing something from your world?" he asks shyly. "I play by ear so I'll be able to accompany you after a bit. Then, whatever you want to hear! Just be sure you let me know when I get tiresome. I get carried away sometimes."

It hadn't ocurred to Elric that the amount of sugar he puts in his tea is out of the ordinary - Holmes never commented. He feels slightly irked by Q.s remark but it's obvious that Q. didn't mean to offend, so he just nods.

Elric shakes his head. He has never learnt any of the songs the humans of his world sang, and certainly he doesn't feel like even trying to sing Melnibonéan music, much less the incantations which were the sole reason he had learnt to sing at all. "I'm sorry, Q., but I can't do that." he says firmly. "I could sing one of the songs Holmes taught me for you..." he adds, voice softening to make his refusal less harsh.

Q nods, not picking up on Elric's irritation. "Gives you lots of energy sugar does. Did you have it where you came from?"

"Oh." No mistaking that! Q plays a few idle chords to cover his embarrassment. He brightens as Elric continues. "Sure! That'd be great! I'd like to hear what sort of songs Sherlock Holmes likes!" He turns to the piano. "Whenever you're ready!"

"I am not certain of that. Not like this - not to sweeten beverages. A cook might have known..." he shrugs, surprised that he doesn't really know.

"He calls it 'classical music'. It is very different from the things heard on the streets..." He begins to sing Schubert's "Ave Maria" in a highly trained, surprisingly high-pitched voice.

"Ah," Q nods knowingly. "You probably had honey. You know, from bees?" He looks the question at Elric.

"Right. I can imagine him being more partial to Beethoven than to the Beatles." He wonders if Sherlock Holmes has heard of the Beatles yet and what he thought of them.

He stares open-mouthed as Elric sings. When he's done, Q applauds enthusiastically. "Wow Elric! That was amazing! You're really good! Bravo!"

Elric smiles. Both Q.'s explanations and the whole situation... it's just silly. He feels the rare urge to laugh. "Oh aye, honey. We had that." he replies instead, as serious as possible.

Elric shrugs. "I don't know, as both names mean nothing to me..."

Elric seems quite embarrassed at Q.s enthusiasm. He looks away, obviously at a loss what to say.

"You might not even have had sugar cane on your world. That's the plant we refine sugar from," he goes on, explaining. "Until those parts of the world were discovered here, honey was the only sweetening available." Q has a remarkable fund of trivia, gathered from all the reading he has done. He's quite serious about it.

"I thought maybe Mr Holmes might have mentioned Beethoven. He was a composer, a German, who lived in the late 1700's I think?" He frowns. "That sounds right," he mutters to himself. Q turns to the piano and plays four somber, stentorian chords. "Those're the opening notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, probably some of the most recognised music on the planet." He turns back to Elric and grins. "The Beatles were a musical group from Liverpool. One of the most famous bands ever." He nods at the terrarium on the piano. "My turtle is named after one of them, John Lennon. I'm a big fan."

"Oh geez! I'm sorry!" Q is abashed. "I didn't mean to embarrass you. But you really are good." He looks earnestly apologetic.

"I don't know about that." Elric is quite perplexed by Q.'s verbosity. That man could go on about things like that for hours, obviously. He's not certain yet whether this is endearing or not.

"He might have. The name sounds somewhat familiar." He smiles "There are quite a lot of names to learn." Apart from everything else, that is. He listens to Q playing Beethoven with interest. The somber music certainly appeals to him. But he's more interested in Q.'s kind of music at the moment. "Could you play or sing one of their songs?"

He waves Q.'s excuses away. He's not used to praise, he realizes, and not very comfortable with it, but Q. certainly means no harm. So he smiles, if a bit strained.

"Er, well no. You probably wouldn't." Q sighs. "Sorry Elric. I do tend to natter on." He grins sheepishly. "My dorm-mates used to take turns using silencing charms on me, especially at exam time."

"He's one of the more famous composers. I'd be surprised if he hadn't mentioned Beethoven." He smiles back. "Yeah. And they must all sound most passing strange to you."

"Sure!" Q is delighted but he sits at the piano for a moment, thinking. What song to play? There are so many! Finally he nods. "This is one of my favourites.

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Jai guru deva

When he's finished, Q just sits, fingering the keys silently.

"Would you like to try singing it?" he asks quietly.

He grins back. "Now that's a bit much." Granted, Q.'s "nattering" is sometimes bothersome, but more often it cheers him up. He certainly doesn't want to silence him.

"They do" he concedes quietly, smiling.

Elric smiles absently. The light, hovering tone of the song and the words, stringing evocative images together... completely different from Holmes kind of music, but strangely touching.

He smiles genuinely. "Aye, I would."

"Well," Q says slowly. "I guess it sort of comes across like I'm showing off. I'm not," he adds hastily, "but I can see how some people would think that."

"This from the man whose parents named him for some Roman god." He chuckles. "I've got a lot of room to talk about odd names."

"Great!" Q turns to the keys but then swivels back. "Would you like me to make you a tambourine? It's a sort of a drum with metal disks on. Then you can play along while you sing!"

"You're named after a god? Your parents' sense of humour was a bit outre, wasn't it?"

"Yes, Quirinus was the deification of Romulus, one of the founders of Rome, a city in Italy. Even better," he rolls his eyes. He was son of Mars, the God of War. Outre doesn't even come close."

"Well it's not exactly a drum like one you pound on," Q explains. "You more just sort of shake it and it jingles. But if you'd rather not." He turns back to the keys. "Let me know if you change your mind. I'll go slowly. Jump in any time."

He starts to play slowly and more talk than sing.

Elric raises an eybrow at that: "Well, that is quite a name to live up to. Although I'm not ceratin I would want to."

"Oh well," Q gives a fatalistic shrug. "At least now I don't have to worry about pleasing my parents."

He shakes his head with a rueful laugh. "They did get it awfully wrong I think. I'm not much of one for a fight." He closes his eyes briefly, remembering the fight with Harry. "Why couldn't they have named me Apollo?" he goes on, trying to shake off the memory. "He's the God of music and poetry. Or just Michael or some normal name?"

Q finishes the song, marveling at Elric's musical ear. He turns to Elric and smiles. "Amazing. You do that so easily. Um, if you're not too tired, there are some songs I know that I think would be perfect for us. Written for two voices and accompaniment. I'd really love to hear what you do with them."

Pleasing one's parents? Elric grimaces involuntarily. "That is another futile undertaking anyway, I'd say."

"Well, It would certainly fit you better, that god of music and poetry. Are you a professional musician of some sort?"

Elric grins. "It can sometimes be very important to get a tone right, you know? I don't feel tired - and I can safely say that I rarely enjoyed music that much. So just proceed, by all means."

"It certainly was in my case," Q says bluntly.

Q grins. "Thanks, but I'm not nearly good enough to be a professional. It's just a hobby."

"Oh yes," he agrees fervently. "I remember one of my dorm mates had a tin ear." He shudders. "Awful. And the worst of it was he enjoyed singing so much!

"Well, if you get tired let me know. You can always kip on the sofa if you need to. I sometimes almost fall asleep at the piano."

"All right, here goes. Just hum along until you pick up the words."

Q begins singing softly, but his voice gets deeper and stronger as the song progresses.

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turn my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools," said I, "you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence

Glee! Elric and Q do Simon and Garfunkel! It's perfect!

"Your music is very pleasant, nevertheless."

"He ought to be happy to get away with some criticism. There are entities which do not forgive a false note..." He grins, somewhat maliciously.

He listens to the song, whose imagery is mostly lost on him. But the world weariness - he understands that. Hello, darkness my old friend, indeed.

He hums along softly again, sliding in simple harmonies here and there. Relaxed and absorbed, he looks far younger than usually.

"Really?" Q turns around on the piano bench. "Er, if you don't mind my asking," he says timidly, "what did you do to make them angry?"

"Thank you!" He beams happily.

"I had a colleague like that at Hogwarts. He was an absolute bear about people getting things right."

"Oh that was marvelous!" Q enthuses. "You're a natural. That song always gives me the shivers. It seems so doom-ish somehow, if you take my meaning. Would you like to try it again?" He's babbling. "I could jot down the words so you'd have an easier time. As a matter of fact," Q says with a laugh, "I should have done that from the start. Hang on. Won't be a mo." He dashes into the kitchen. "I'll put the kettle on again too. Singing is thirsty work. Here you are Elric." He hands him a pad of paper with the words written on the top sheet. "Sorry about that."

Elric rubs his chin, looking oddly rueful. "My mother died giving birth to me - what she might have thought about me remains thus unknown, but my father made it abundantly clear that he thought it a poor trade, especially as I turned out to be like that -" he vaguely gestures at his pale face and white hair. "What did you do to offend yours?"

"Hogwarts? I have heard that before - but I don't really know about that place, yet - can you tell me?"

"Not quite a natural... it certainly took some training." He grins. "And I like your song, 'doomish' or not." He grabs the paper and starts to read the words - they still do not make much sense, but its easy enough to commit them to memory. He hears Q. clatter in the kitchen, and oddly comforting sound.

"Oh gosh!" He looks stricken. I'm sorry!" Now he looks astonished. "But you can't help that!" Q exclaims. "It's in your genes! You don't have any control over it!" He looks indignant on Elric's behalf. "I'm a wizard and my Dad isn't," he explains ruefully. "Same sort of thing as you. He never really forgave me for that. And Mother, well, she just wasn't there. Her work was more important than I was."

"Sure. Hogwarts is the school for wizards and witches. It's in Scotland. It's where we go to learn magic. I was a professor there. Briefly." He looks away and bites his lip.

"I tool piano lessons but not voice. I just sang along. My Dad's influence actually." He gives a little laugh. "He loved his music." Q goes on, much more enthusiastically. "Oh they did some fabulous stuff. Simon and Garfunkel are their names."

Q comes back out with a tray. "Here you go!" He peers at Elric closely. "You're sure you're not too tired?" He inches the sugar bowl closer to the other man. "Help yourself! OOH! Cakes!" He slaps himself on the forehead. "I forgot!" He scurries back into the kitchen.

Elric shrugs and smiles. "No I can't help it, but it's just the way people are, don't you think? Rejecting what is different... But why would your father not forgive you for being a wizard? Certainly a gift for sorcery is a reason for pride in a father, is it not?"

Elric bows his head. "Not the best topic, it seems. I'm sorry for bringing it up. The ways of the magic of this world are of great interest for me, though."

This, oddly, sends a stab of envy through his heart. To imagine a father and a son, even those two, who apparently did not go along all that well, sharing a moment of joy like that... "I can't imagine a better way to learn" he replies hoarsly. "Maybe you could introduce me to more music from those bards..."

Elric leans back a little after Q.'s gone. He is tired, alright - he still tires so easily - but he wouldn't admit it for all the world. When didi he have an evening like that, such innocent bliss? Tea will help, he knows that by no, so he prepares another cup with tons of sugar. Almost as an afterthought, he refills Q.'s cup to, then he leans back again, thoroughly tasting the bitter fragrance of the Earl Gray.

"That's certainly true." He sighs "Wizards went into hiding because we're different." Q drums his fingers on his knee, not looking at Elric. "Because he wasn't a wizard. He's what we call a squib- a non-magic person born of wizarding parents. I guess he was hoping I wouldn't have any magic either."

It's all right," Q reassures him. "I don't mind talking about it in general. It's just my own case is sort of...painful." That's putting it mildly.

"Well, I sort of tried to stop being a wizard. You know, so my Dad would like me. So I tried to do everything the muggle way and that included listening to muggle music, which he adored." Q shrugs, a wry expression on his face. "It didn't work out. You can't stop using your magic. It's like trying to stop using one of your hands."

"But," he says, brightening, "I'd be glad to teach you some more songs. Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, I know lots of songs!"

Q bustles back in with a package of biscuits. "Sorry, only biscuits and they're store bought. Never mastered magical cooking I'm afraid. Thanks." He nods and picks up his cup, adding milk. "Another Simon and Garfunkel song? One that's a little bit lighter this time?"

Drat! The video didn't copy/paste! :( Oh well. *sigh* Here are the lyrics. You should go to YOUTUBE and check out the song if you don't know it. It really is great!

Someone told me
Its all happening at the zoo.

I do believe it,
I do believe its true.

Its a light and tumble journey
From the east side to the park;
Just a fine and fancy ramble
To the zoo.

But you can take the crosstown bus
If its raining or its cold,
And the animals will love it
If you do.

Somethin tells me
Its all happening at the zoo.

The monkeys stand for honesty,
Giraffes are insincere,
And the elephants are kindly but
Theyre dumb.
Orangutans are skeptical
Of changes in their cages,
And the zookeeper is very fond of rum.

Zebras are reactionaries,
Antelopes are missionaries,
Pigeons plot in secrecy,
And hamsters turn on frequently.
What a gas! you gotta come and see
At the zoo.

Elric shrugs. What use would it be, telling Q. that it wasN't about the colour of his skin, but about the weakness, about the fact that he was not fit for what he was born for. In the end, it amounted to nothing anyway. He smiles. "I should think so." This evening of music so very different from the music he's grown up with, that's a gift in itself.

He listens, wondering what a 'zoo' is. It sounds like a very strange menagerie, but the mood is infective, and he finds himself tapping his foot to the rhythm.

"Let us try to do something with this one, by all means." He hums a slight cadence, emphasizing the rhythm.

Big time Simon and Garfunkel fan over here, too ;-)

"Right you are!" he agrees enthusiastically. "Just let me jot down the words..." He gets the pad from Elric and scribbles hastily. He frowns at the paper then taps it with his wand. "There," he hands it back. "Now you can read it. It was a bit sloppy. I don't know if there's a zoo in Margate but if there is, we could go and you could see some of our animals." He loves zoos.

"All right. Ready?" His hands are poised over the keys and he looks at Elric expectantly.

Oh that's great! I'd hate to keep throwing songs at you that you didn't recognise!

"Aye..." he leans back and takes another generous sip of tea.

Elric watches Q. sribbling away and wonders how he is supposed to readthat. Then Q. taps the paper with his wand, and the unruly letters all wriggle into a neat, readable shape. Elric stares silently. He has not been close enough to observe the magic of those so-called wizards, and now he sees it brough into effect for the first time before his eyes. Just a slight tap with a stick of polished wood, but it achieves things that he would hardly have deemed posiible. How can magic be so easy?

He has had only half an ear on what Q. has been saying. Something about 'zoo' and 'animals'? An invitation?
He hesitates. "Certainly..."

He stares at the paper in his hand, the neat letters, and the words which still do not make sense.

He nods, trying to remember the tune, but it slips away from him as his thiughts wander back to what he has just seen, so the first notes are slightly off-key.

Throw as much Simon and Grafunkel at me as you like, please ;-)

Seeing Elric frown, Q does as well. "What's wrong? Can't you read my writing?" He glances at the paper. No it seems all right. Ah. "Oh don't worry," he explains, thinking he knows the reason for the frown. "The animals aren't loose or anything. They're kept in cages and enclosures so we can see them but they can't get out. It's not dangerous. Are there lions and tigers and bears where you come from?", he asks eagerly.

Q goes back to the piano. He notices Elric is a bit off-key. "Are you sure you're not getting too tired? I'd hate for you to get sick or anything."

YAY!!!
I found this pic of Ian Hart singing somewhere and thought it would be appropriate! :)

"Your writing is quite perfect - now." He glances at Q. obliquely. "Tell me more about the ways of your magic, one of these days, if you will. It's very unusual, to my eyes."
He laughs lightly. "Oh. I'm not worried about the animals. Interested, rather. I think there were those animals, where I came from, but they could be very diferent, too. It certainly will be educational, taking a closer look at your "zoo.""

He frowns at Q.'s last remark. "I'm well" he growls, finally to irked by Q.'s constant worrying.

Many aplogies for the endless delay. Work-and-everything-else were a bit on the insane side these last weeks... have to go on a business trip, now, for a few days, but after that I should be able to reply on a more regular basis... *sighs*

Q begins to pick out Requiem for a Marionette, it's eerie melody wafting through the cottage. "Ask away. I'll tell you what I can. I'm not very good at explaining things though."

"Oh you'll have a wonderful time! I wish I could take you to the Magical Zoo. But it's in London and I don't know if we could get there."

"Right, right! Sorry!" Q ducks his head, abashed. "Whenever you're ready then."

Be well, fly low and stay cool! We'll catch you on the flip side when you come back!
